Mankato, Minn. — Freshman Laura Leber (Council Bluffs, Iowa) scored two goals and added one assist to lead the Minnesota State women's soccer to victory over the University of Nebraska-Omaha. The 3-0 win is just the second time MSU defeated UNO. The last time was in 2000 when MSU won 2-0.
After a scoreless first half Leber got MSU on the board with a goal at the 47:30 mark. UNO goalkeeper Ellen Petersen came out to challenge junior Carly Petersen (Verona, Wis.) for the ball and C. Petersen tapped it ahead to a streaking Leber for an easy tap-in goal.
The second goal was a role reversal as Leber assisted C. Petersen on her third goal of the season. C. Petersen was just above the goalkeeper's box when she slid and shot the ball over the head of E. Petersen.
Leber finished off the scoring with her third goal of the season at the 85:14 mark. Her shot beat E. Petersen and trickled across the goal line.
Senior Nicole Johannson (North Delta, B.C.) improved to 4-1 with the shutout victory. Johannson made eight saves, her highest total of her career.
MSU is now 5-2 with a 1-0 NCC record. UNO drops to 2-4 and is 1-1 in NCC action. UNO recorded eight shots on goal, while MSU had just six. UNO recorded four cornerkicks, while MSU didn't have one.
Minnesota State will face Concordia-St. Paul, in a nonconference match, Friday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m. at The Pitch at Gage Towers.
