GRAND FORKS, N.D.--In Thursday’s win over Minnesota State, the Fighting Sioux felt they didn’t finish the game as strongly as they could have.
This afternoon against No. 20 Augustana, UND got the complete game it was looking for in a 90-49 dismantling of the Vikings in front of 2,311 at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
With the win the Sioux, 20-1 overall and 5-1 in the North Central Conference, climb past the Vikings into sole possession of second place in the league standings.
UND was dominant in virtually all phases of the game, holding Augustana to its lowest scoring output of the season while pulling down a season-high 61 rebounds, including a season-high 26 on the offensive glass.
After an often sluggish start to the second half by both teams, the Sioux began to assert themselves late in the period with a 18-4 run. Sophomore Jossy Bergan (Valley City, N.D.) started the barrage with a three-pointer with just under three minutes on the clock, then capped it off with a mid-court steal and a layup with just 29 seconds remaining. The Sioux outburst turned what had been a three-point UND lead with under four minutes left into a 10-point halftime cushion.
In search of a spark, Augustana’s Liz Helsper opened the second half with an and-one layup just 33 seconds in, but that would be the Vikings only field goal for the next eight minutes.
UND blew the game wide open with a spectacular 18-0 run, with a Bergan three-pointer providing the exclamation point to make it 59-29 with 11:51 to play.
Then, unlike Thursday, the Sioux kept the foot to the pedal for the rest of the half with all 12 players finding the scoresheet.
Bergan was a sparkplug off the bench, providing 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Sioux were led by junior forward Kierah Kimbrough’s (Greenbush, Minn.) 22 points. She also had nine rebounds.
While Bergan and Kimbrough were the only two Sioux to reach double figures, UND had 10 different players score at least four points.
The Sioux also benefited from a season-high 11 three-pointers (in 24 attempts), including three each by Bergan and fellow reserve guard Mallory Youngblut (Fr., Davenport, Iowa).
Whitney Hofer and Molley Hayes scored 10 points each for the Vikings, who shot just 32.1 percent from the floor and 12.5 percent (2-for-16) from beyond the arc.
UND will wrap up a three-game homestand next Thursday when it hosts St. Cloud State, in a game televised on the Fighting Sioux Sports Network. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
