GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Fighting Sioux baseball team was swept by Augustana in today’s doubleheader, 3-0 and 13-4. The Sioux fall to 12-18 overall and 4-12 in the NCC while Augustana improves to 9-27 overall and 4-12 in the NCC.
Game 1 – Augustana – 3 North Dakota – 0
Augustana’s Tyler Pierson threw a complete-game shutout, striking out two while allowing just three UND hits. The win is Pierson’s first of the season.
UND’s Mike Lueck (Jr., Victoria, Minn.) suffered the loss. Lueck threw a complete game, scattering six hits while allowing just three runs.
Tim Shows put the Vikings on the board in the second inning with a base hit up the middle that scored Augie’s first run of the game.
The Vikings’ second run would come on a Ryan Kessinger ground out that scored Andy Ahrendt from third. The last run for Augie was driven in by Ian Strum. Strum singled to right-center field to score Mason Vig. Vig was 3-3 at the plate for the Vikings.
Josh Nelson (So., Apple Valley, Minn.), Ryne Jungling (So., Mandan, N.D.) and Scott Schmidt (Sr., Alexandria, Minn.) each had a hit in the contest for the Sioux.
Game 2 – Augustana – 14 North Dakota – 4
Augustana’s Nate Baumann hit a grand slam in the fourth inning was the straw that broke the camel’s back as UND fell to the Vikings, 13-4.
The Vikings got up early on a Jeff Green double to right-center. Green drove in two with the double to give Augie the early 2-0 lead.
Ian Strum would drive in the next Augie run with a single to left field that scored Jake Pole. In the fourth, Baumann hit is blast to put Augustana up, 7-0 after four innings.
The Vikings would put together a six-run seventh inning and Nolan Miller provided the muscle with a two-run bomb to right field.
North Dakota got on the board in the fifth courtesy of a Josh Lagein (Fr., Devils Lake, N.D.) single that drove in Scott Schmidt. Andrew Gudmunson (So., Minot, N.D.) drove in the second run of the inning for UND with a single to centerfield that scored Lagein.
Gudmunson would hit a bases loaded single in the bottom of the seventh that scored Jabby Bakhit (So., Omaha, Neb.) and Josh Nelson. In the game, Gudmunson went 3-4 with three RBIs.
UND will return to action on Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3 against St. Cloud State. It is the final regular season series for UND and the series will be played at Kraft Field in Grand Forks. Friday’s and Saturday’s games are scheduled for 1 & 3 p.m.
