SCSU's Kiersten Mormann recorded 13 digs against Minnesota Duluth |
St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State University hosted the University of Minnesota Duluth in a volleyball match in Halenbeck Hall this afternoon, October 27, and it was the guest Bulldogs who walked away with the win 3-0 (30-14, 30-19, 30-28).
Minnesota Duluth came into the match as the third ranked team in division II and lived up to the billing, as they took game one 30-14. The Bulldogs hit .441 in the opening game recording 20 kills to just five errors, while SCSU was only able to knock down five kills hitting .032.
UMD cooled off a bit in game two hitting just half as well as they did in game one at .222, but still managed to put 20 kills on the board. In the final game of the match the Huskies put up their best fight of the afternoon forcing Minnesota Duluth into 12 errors and just a .164 hitting percentage. The game was back and forth entire way through with the score tied several times. In the end however, UMD managed to scrape enough points together to earn the sweep of the host Huskies.
For the match UMD had four players in double digits for kills with Vicky Braegelmann notching a match high 14. Minnesota Duluth setter Katie Ganglehoff also had a match high, with 52 set assists. There were a couple of new faces atop the leader for SCSU, with Kala Jensen’s (Spring Valley, Minn.) seven kills on offense and Kiersten Mormann’s (Omaha, Neb.) 13 digs on defense, each for team game highs. As a team the Huskies also recorded 10 total blocks for the match.
UMD stays unbeaten in North Central Conference play at 9-0 and improves to 23-1, while the Huskies drop to 2-6 in the NCC and 10-17 overall heading into the final two weeks of the season. SCSU gets back on the road next week on Friday, November 2nd in Mankato, Minn., for an NCC match with Minnesota State. First serve is set for 7:00. That will be the final road trip for SCSU as the Huskies finish off 2007 with three straight home games.
