Husky Football Improves to 3-0

St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Cloud State forced four University of Wisconsin-Whitewater turnovers and blocked a Warhawks field goal attempt in a 26-6 non-conference football game Saturday evening at Husky Stadium.
St. Cloud State junior Kenneth Patrick (Milwaukee) scored on a one-yard run at 8:46 of the first quarter to give the Huskies a 7-0 lead that they never relinquished. The two teams exchanged field goals in the second quarter as junior Brian Cristan (Mahtomedi) kicked a 32-yard field goal. A school record tying 52-yard field goal by UW-Whitewater’s Jeff Schebler put the Warhawks on the board at 3:45 of the second quarter.
The Huskies took a 13-3 lead into half-time following a 31-yard Cristan field goal.
St. Cloud State scored twice in the third quarter as senior quarterback Mike Hammerseng (Minnetonka) found senior wide receiver Derek Sedin (Santa Maria, CA) in the end zone on a seven yard pass play at 10:24 and again with a 25-yard connection at the 2:45 mark of the quarter. UW-Whitewater answered with two scores in the fourth quarter on a one-yard Max Wasikowski run at 14:56 and a six-yard passing play from QB Danny Jones to Jordan Wells.
The number two-ranked team in NCAA Division II, Wisconsin-Whitewater held their own and accumulated 347 yards on total offense while holding SCSU to 277 yards of offense. The Warhawks were led by senior running back Justin Beaver who rushed 24 times for 177 yards. Danny Jones completed 16 of 36 passes for 154 yards and one touchdown, and Jordan Wells and Neil Mrkvicka each caught four passes.
The Huskies gained 240 yards on their passing game as Hammerseng completed 23 of 36 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns. Sedin was his main target, catching 13 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns, all career highs. The defensive highlights included an interception and fumble recovery by senior linebacker Aaron LaPointe (Elk River). Junior defensive end Ryan Kees (Eagan) recovered a fumble and notched two tackles for loss and a QB sack. Sophomore linebacker David Kamin (Menomonee Falls, WI) also recoved a fumble. Junior DE Cale Pulczinski (Mukwanogo, WI) continued his stellar play this season with his fourth quarterback sack. Senior DB Philip Hedlof (Blomkest) led all players with 11 tackles.
St. Cloud State improved to 3-0 and will open its final season in the North Central Conference next Saturday at the Universityof South Dakota. The Coyotes were 36 -22 winners over the University of Minnesota Duluth. Wisconsin-Whitewater dropped to 1-1 overall.
