Women's Basketball Upset Bid Falls Short

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State University women’s basketball team upset bid came up short in a 67-62 North Central Conference loss to league leader and #4 ranked University of South Dakota Saturday afternoon at Halenbeck Hall.

St. Cloud State scored the opening points of the game and controlled the tempo in the first half working the clock to the Huskies advantage. SCSU led nearly the entire half and twice led by as many as seven points, the first time at 17-10 on a jumped by first year post Rachel Booth (Minneapolis). After USD closed the gap to one point on two occasions, SCSU went on a 7-1 run on a traditional three-point play by senior forward Kayla Rengel (St. Cloud) and back to back baskets by junior guard Katie Tacheny (Woodbury) to take a 26-19 lead at the 5:07 mark of the first half. USD then went on an 8-0 run with scoring from three different players, including a Shannon Daly jumper at the 2:16 mark that gave the Coyotes their first lead of the game. An Abby Rittenhouse (Brurnsville) rebound led to a Katie Tacheny break and a Krystal Scott (Rosemount) jumper at the buzzer that gave the Huskies a 28-27 half-time lead. Both teams shot nearly 53 percent in the first 12 minutes of the game and the Huskies out-rebounded USD 18-12 in the first frame.

The University of South Dakota opened the second half on a 16-6 run culminating in two Jasmine Mosley free throws to give the Coyotes the largest lead of the game, 43-34 at 13:57. St. Cloud State stuck with the Coyotes and closed the gap to four points as Katie Tacheny scored four points and Rachel Booth four points and the USD lead was 46-42 at 11:18. The South Dakota lead increased to eight points three times in the final 6:28 and SCSU would cut the deficit each time. With the Coyotes lead at 61-53 with 1:35 left in the game, SCSU worked back into winning contention. Kayla Rengel scored on a traditional three-point play and Rachel Booth nailed a jumper to get the Huskies to three points, 61-58 with one minute to go. A couple of Shannon Daly free throws put USD up 63-58. Rengel answered with a jumper of her own and USD led 63-60 with :32 seconds left. The Huskies were forced to foul and put the Coyotes on the line with :25 seconds to again increase the lead to five. Tacheny went to the line for the Huskies with :19 seconds left and made two free throws to close the USD lead to 65-63. The Huskies forced a steal but USD stole the ball back and Amber Hegge made a basket with nine seconds left. SCSU had a chance for one more play but were not able to score.

St. Cloud State made 22 of 22 free throw attempts in the game as Tacheny made ten, Rengel seven, Booth three and Scott two free throws. All four players finished in double figure scoring, led by Tacheny with 18 points and six rebounds. Rengel finished the game with 17 points, three assists and steals, and two blocked shots. Booth had 15 points and Scott, a junior guard ten points. The Huskies shot 40.8 percent from the field and out-rebounded USD 32-27.

South Dakota, ranked first in the North Central Region for three straight weeks was led in scoring by Jenna Hoffman with 14 points. Bridget Yoerger notched 12 points, six rebounds and four steals. Jeana Hoffman cameup with 11 points and Jasmine Mosley finished the game with ten points. Ashley Robinette led all players with eight rebounds. USD shot 44.2 percent for the game.

St. Cloud State is 11-14 overall and 3-7 in the NCC. South Dakota improved to 22-1 overall and 8-0 in the NCC.
