Huskies Shut Out by Wildcats

Saturday, September 29, 2007

Jake Kranz had 195 yards passing versus Central Washington

St. Cloud, Minn - The Huskies hosted Central Washington in an NCC match-up this evening. The Husky offense had trouble getting rolling while the Wildcats rolled up 439 yards. In the end SCSU was held scoreless in the 29-0 loss.

Despite being out-gained 120-41 in the first quarter, the Huskies left trailing by just one score at 7-0. Central Washington took the opening kick off and drove 72 yards in nine plays to take a 7-0 lead just 3:43 into the game. The Husky offense was forced to punt on their first possession giving the ball back to the Wildcats. After a 50 yard punt return by Central Washington it looked as if they were ready to score again. The Husky defense bent but would not break forcing a fumble in the red zone and recover it halting the drive. Miscues harmed the St. Cloud State offense but the defense stiffened keeping the Wildcats out of the end zone.

The second period was scoreless for 14:58 before Central Washington kicked a field goal to head into the break up 13-0. Central took the ball in their own territory with two minutes remaining in the half. With the Wildcats driving, it looked at is if quarterback Mike Reilly had found an open receiver down the field, but at the last second the Huskies Matt Jensen (Mequon, Wis.) rolled over to knock away the pass and save six points. The Wildcats were forced to punt, but the Huskies Kenneth Patrick had the ball go through his hands in the return and the Wildcats recovered just 14 yards from a score. As they had all game the Husky defense stepped up pushing Central Washington back two yards and holding them to the field goal. At half time the Wildcats held the advantage at 13-0.

In the second half Central Washington broke the game open when they intercepted a Jake Kranz (Hastings) pass and returned it 36 yards to the Husky 27 yard line. Three plays later the Wildcats scored. The conversion pass failed leaving the score at 19-0, which is where the quarter would end.

Central tacked on 10 more points in the fourth quarter and kept the Huskies out of the end zone as well giving SCSU its second shutout in as many weeks. In his first career start Kranz finished with a game high 195 yards on 15-34 passing. He was also the Huskies leading rusher on the day with 40 yards on eight carries. Fred Williams (Milwaukee, Wis.) finished with a game high seven receptions for 113 yards.

With the loss the Huskies drop to 3-2 on the season and 0-2 in NCC play. The Wildcats improve to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in league games. SCSU is on the road again next week for a North Central Conference game with Western Washington.
