Mankato, Minn. - The #13 Minnesota State women’s soccer team recorded its ninth consecutive victory and ninth shutout of the season with a 1-0 win over the University of South Dakota. The Mavericks tied the single-season record for shutouts in a season, set by the 2005 squad. MSU is one win away from tying its all-time consecutive wins streak of 10.
Freshman Laura Leber (Council Bluffs, Iowa) scored the lone goal for the Mavericks at 35:54. Leber picked up a rebound and shot it over South Dakota’s goalkeeper. The ball hit the crossbar and came back to Leber’s head and she put it in the back of the net.
Senior goalkeeper Nicole Johannson (North Delta, B.C.) made eight saves in the match, tying a career-high. She improves to 12-1 on the season and earned her seventh shutout. She is now second in single-season shutouts behind Jennie Dehamer who had nine in 2005. Johannson’s 12 wins puts her third in single-season wins.
The Mavericks (13-2 overall, 8-0 NCC) travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. Oct. 21 to play Augustana.
