Women's Hoops Posts 86-72 NCC Win Over Minnesota Duluth

St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Cloud State withstood a second half University of Minnesota Duluth run and went on to post an 86-72 North Central Conference women’s basketball win Saturday afternoon at Halenbeck Hall.

St. Cloud State played a solid first half, building a 14-4 lead four minutes into the game, but UMD scored seven straight points to trail by three, 14-11 at the 14:18 mark. The Huskies went back to building the lead, shooting 50 percent from the field and taking a 46-35 lead into half time. St. Cloud State first year guard Talisha Barlow (Little Canada) scored 11 of her 15 points in the first half.

Two baskets by SCSU senior forward Kayla Rengel (St. Cloud), a three-point basket by junior guard Anna Cashman (Faribault) and a jumper by first year post Rachel Booth (Minneapolis) put the Huskies up by 20 two and a half minutes into the second half. The Huskies maintained that lead for the next couple of minutes until UMD’s Ella Olson with a traditional three point play plus a layup and Katy Freeman nailed two baskets and a free throw, to cut into the lead and trailed 58-48 at the 13:28 mark. Two Kelsey Hewitt free throws at the 6:26 mark and the Huskies lead was down to one point, 65-64. Free throws by Booth, back-to-back layups by junior guard Krystal Scott (Rosemount) and Barlow increased the lead to 72-66. Following a UMD timeout at the four minute mark, the Huskies continued to make free throws and added a couple of insurance baskets for the win.

Four Huskies finished the game in double figure scoring led by Booth with a game high 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals. Tacheny scored a career high 17 points on six of eight shooting from the field, and dished out four assists and had three steals. Barlow finished the game with 15 points and a game high nine rebounds, which equals her career high. Rengel completed the scoring with 13 points and six rebounds. St. Cloud State shot 50.8 percent from the field for the game and out rebounded the Bulldogs 44-26.

Minnesota Duluth had four players score in double figures led by Katy Freeman and Kelsey Hewitt with 14 points each. Kim Wagers and Venessa Ostergaard added 12 points each for the Bulldogs who shot 45 percent from the field.

St. Cloud State is 9-8 overall and 1-1 in the NCC. UMD dropped to 3-13 overall and 0-2 in the NCC. The Huskies play at Minnesota State University on Thursday, Jan. 17.
