St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State University Football team got its first taste of another opponent this evening when Northern State University came to town. After the first half ended in a 7-7 tie, the Huskies shut out the Wolves in the second half en route to the 17-7 victory.
The Huskies got on the board first. After their initial drive ended with a turnover on downs, a quick three and out by the SCSU defense and a 22 yard return by Kenneth Patrick (Milwaukee, WI) gave the Huskies the ball at the Wolves 35 yard line. The drive began with a big pass play from Mike Hammerseng (Minnetonka) to Rocky Horn (Melrose) for 21 yards down to the 14 yard line. Four plays later Jake Machacek (Eagan) took it in from three yards out and Justin Delgado (Burlington, WI) knocked it through the uprights to put the home team up 7-0 with 7:18 left to play in the first period.
Northern would go three and out on the ensuing drive and then the teams would trade turnovers as the next three drives ended in a fumble and two interceptions to close out the first quarter. The defenses took over in the second quarter and held the offenses in check until the Wolves put together an 80 yard drive to tie the game just before the half. Starting from their own 20 with 6:10 remaining in the half the Wolves rushed eight times and mixed in some quick short passes along the way to grind down the clock and move down the field. The capper was a 30 yard run off tackle to the front corner of the end zone with 48 seconds left in the period. The kick was good and the teams went into the locker rooms knotted up at 7-7.
The Wolves started with the ball in the second half looking to build on the momentum from the first half but the SCSU defense was up to the challenge. In their opening drive NSU went backwards 16 yards and was forced to punt. A pair of short drives by each offense were exchanged and the Huskies began their second drive of the half inside NSU territory. The Huskies started on the NSU 41 and 10 plays later they were in the end zone, this time on a three yard hook-up from Jon Quesnel (Eagan) to Derek Sedin (Santa Maria, CA) in the back corner of the end zone. Another kick from Delgado and SCSU was back on top 14-7.
The Huskies capped off the evening with a 13 play 69 yard scoring drive that took seven minutes off the fourth quarter clock and added to their lead with a Delgado field goal.
Patrick finished the game with 94 rushing yards on 21 carries. Sedin caught five passes for 67 yards and a touchdown. Machacek finished his collegiate debut with 30 yards on eight carries and his first touchdown.
With the win SCSU is now 1-0 on the season while NSU starts off 0-1. The Huskies hit the road next weekend to Bismarck, ND and another match-up with a future conference foe when they take on the University of Mary from the NSIC.
